Delegate Albo’s Traffic Update

With progress, there is some pain.  We are fortunate to have a number of projects under construction right now that will make our long NoVa commutes much better.  Beltway widening, 95 Widening and the Fairfax County Parkway’s final section are all underway.  As your Delegate, I am often notified of future road work and lane closures.  And I’m sure you want to be aware of lane closures coming up, so you can avoid them if possible.

Below is information from the public relations arm of VDOT that I think you are going to want to know.

Virginia Megaprojects Update

IMPORTANT NOTICES

    Significant closures on I-495: Steel beams will be lifted at Little River Turnpike and I-66 this week. Expect intermittent full roadway closures at the Springfield Interchange and other areas. Read more here .

DULLES METRORAIL UTILITY RELOCATION Nighttime work

  • A single lane of westbound Leesburg Pike (Route 7) will close at Tyco Road Monday-Friday nights.
  • Multiple lanes of eastbound Leesburg Pike will close at Spring Hill Road Monday-Friday nights.
  • A single lane of northbound Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) will close at Anderson Road Monday-Friday nights.
  • Multiple lanes of northbound Spring Hill Road will close at Leesburg Pike Monday-Friday nights.
  • The right turn lane of eastbound Tysons Boulevard will close at Galleria Drive . Detour.
  • Single lanes in both directions of Galleria Drive will close at Tysons Boulevard Tuesday-Saturday nights.
  • The frontage road along westbound Leesburg Pike will close near Chain Bridge Road Monday-Friday nights. Detour .

Weekday work

  • Expect daytime delays in the Tysons Corner area along the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267), the Dulles International Airport Access Road , Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Chain Bridge Road (Route 123). For an interactive map of these closures, visit VAmegaprojects.com and click “Lane Closures.”

Ongoing work

  • The median of Route 7 at Marshall’s Drive is permanently closed. No left turns from Route 7 to Marshall’s Drive or Frontage Road . For details click here .
  • No left turns from the Route 123 south ramp to Route 7 east . Use International Drive. For details click here .

Utility relocation is occurring on Route 7 in the Tysons Corner area in preparation for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project.

I-495 CAPITAL BELTWAY HOT LANES Nighttime work

  • MAJOR CLOSURE The Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway (I-495 south) will close at I-66 Monday-Thursday nights starting at 9:30 p.m. Traffic will detour to westbound I-66. The ramp from westbound I-66 to I-495 south will also close. For details, click here .
  • Expect nighttime intermittent full roadway closures at Capital Beltway interchanges throughout this week. Bridge construction closes ramps and roadways at Arlington Boulevard (Route 50), Little River Turnpike (Route 236), Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road). For details on these significant closures click here .
  • The left lane of westbound Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) will close Tuesday night.
  • A single lane in both directions of the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) will close at I-495 Monday and Wednesday nights.
  • A single lane in both directions of the Dulles International Airport Access Road will close Monday-Tuesday nights.

Weekday work

  • Expect delays during the day at most interchanges on the Inner and Outer Loops of I-495 and on certain ramps and overpasses within the project area. For an interactive map of these closures,  visit www.VAmegaprojects.com and click “Lane Closures.”
  • A single lane of I-395 HOV lanes will close at I-495 Monday-Friday.
  • A single lane of eastbound Gallows Road (Route 650) will close at I-495 Monday-Friday
  • A single lane of Sh reve Road will close between Lee Highway (Route 29) and Oldewood Drive Monday-Friday. A flagger will direct traffic.

Ongoing work

  • Sound wall construction continues: Inner Loop (I-495 north) between Braddock Road (Route 620) and Little River Turnpike and near I-66 .
  • Sound wall removal: Inner Loop from Gallows Road to Arlington Boulevard .
  • Clearing continues: Inner Loop from Little River Turnpike to Gallows Road .
  • Concrete barrier installation: Dulles Toll Road interchange at I-495 .
  • EXIT 46B CLOSED: The Outer Loop (I-495 south) ramp to northbound Route 123 toward Mclean is closed through the fall. The detour route uses the Dulles Airport Access Road, which does not have a toll in this area. For more information, click here .

  • The left lanes in both directions of Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) are closed at the I-495 interchange for about 500 feet. These lanes will remain closed 24/7 through November. They will close again in 2010. For information on this closure, click here .
  • All Gallows Road traffic has been shifted at I-495 for bridge construction. For more information, click here .
  • All Braddock Road traffic has been shifted for bridge construction. For more information, click here .
  • Braddock Road bridge pedestrian detour: Click here . Pedestrians can also use Fairfax Connector route 306 or Metrobus routes 17A, 17G or 17M across the Braddock Road bridge.
  • The left lanes of Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) under I-495 will be closed 24/7, weather permitting. For details click here .

Crews are building 14 miles of HOV/HOT (High Occupancy Toll) lanes from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road.

I-95 WIDENING Nighttime work

  • Northbound I-95: Paving will close two lanes between Route 1 and the Accotink Creek bridge Monday-Thursday nights.
  • Southbound I-95: Two lanes closed from the Pohick Creek bridge to Route 1 Monday night.

Weekday work

  • Monday through Friday, daytime (non-rush hour) single lane closures are planned for both directions of I-95 from Fairfax County Parkway to Gordon Boulevard (Route 123) for bridge work and pavin g of the fourth lane I-95.
  • A single lane of I-95 HOV lanes will close between Exit 163, Lorton Road, and Exit 160, Gordon Boulevard Monday-Friday.
  • A single lane in both directions of Lorton Road will close at the I-95 overpass Monday-Friday.
  • A single lane of Furnace Road under I-95 will be closed Monday-Thursday. A flagger will direct traffic.

Ongoing work

  • The last half-mile of the right lane of the Route 1 ramp to northbound I-95 will be closed until December. This will not effect northbound HOV traffic.

A fourth lane is being added in each direction for six miles on I-95 from Occoquan Road (Route 123) at the Occoquan River to Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100).

ABOUT LANE CLOSURES
For detailed lane closure information, please click here . While much construction will take place behind concrete barriers, lane closures will be necessary at certain times and these lane closures are weather permitting. In general, there are no lane closures between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Night work generally occurs between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless otherwise noted. There are no lane closures on holiday weekends.
