The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, the Virginia Railway Express and CSX are working with Amtrak and the Federal Railroad Administration to build a third main line track for north of the Franconia-Springfield VRE station. Currently, the tracks are owned by CSX so increased service in the corridor isn’t possible since VRE can’t get more track time. However, this new seven mile track will be a VRE only rail which will dramatically speed up service.
The project is scheduled for completion by the spring of 2010.
