Decreasing DUIs in Virginia

Good news!  DUIs are down dramatically in VA.  A recent article by the Washington Examiner reported that DUI collisions have declined in Virginia since 2006 while remaining flat in Maryland and increasing in DC.

The real story behind this article is that Virginia drivers decided to become better drivers than those in Maryland and in DC.  Why?  Because the Virginia General Assembly has been systematically increasing the punishments for DUIs.  Once drivers heard the laws were stricter, less people decided to get behind the wheel and drive under the influence.  It’s not the same in MD and DC.  Their laws are lax and consequently, their streets are less safe.

As you may recall, I was either the author or co-author of all of Virginia’s increased punishments over the past decade.   And now, the word is getting out in VA to not drive drunk, or you will pay a hefty price.
