Governor McDonnell has designated this week, June 1-8, as Fire and EMS Memorial Week throughout Virginia.
This statewide Memorial Week will pay special tribute to those firefighters and emergency medical services personnel who lost their lives serving their fellow citizens.
Currently, the Commonwealth has more than 36,000 emergency medical services providers and 125,171 career and volunteer firefighters. These individuals play an essential role in saving lives and protecting property in our local communities.
During Fire and EMS Memorial Week, all citizens are encouraged to remember all fire and emergency medical personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community and to pay their respects to the survivors of our fallen heroes.
Join me in remembering those who have lost their lives and giving thanks to those who help protect them!
