Although it seems that summer has just begun, September is right around the corner! This means it’s time to get back into the swing of things and prepare for upcoming school year. It is also time for this year’s back-to-school tax holiday. It will begin on Friday, August 2 and run through Sunday, August 4, 2013.
Over the past four years, this opportunity has proven to benefit retailers and shoppers in our state, helping to increase revenue surpluses and making Virginia’s economy stronger. During these days retailers often chose to pay the sales tax themselves on items that do not apply to the holiday, making more deals available to customers.
There is no limit to number of items one can buy, but a few items are not tax-exempt. The holiday does not apply to most clothing or shoes, especially athletic ware and accessories, priced $100 dollars or less. School and office supplies which retail for $20 or less per item are also do not apply for the tax holiday. More specifications of what applies to the tax holiday can be found at www.tax.virginia.gov.
