Legislation Allowing Uber, Lyft and Other Transportation Network Companies to Operate in Virginia Passes from House Committee

Earlier today, a compromise allowing companies such as Uber and Lyft operate in Virginia, passed the House Transportation Committee. This legislation, HB 1662, lets these companies become licensed with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. With this bill, drivers will be required to undergo background checks including criminal background and driving history. In addition, drivers must be 21 years old.

These regulations will allow Virginia to take advantage of technological innovations while also keeping citizens safe. I’d like to highlight again, that this a compromise between Uber, Lyft, and Taxi companies to create a fair working environment. I’m pleased to see this move through committee.

HB 1662 will be taken up by the full House later this week. You can read the full text of the bill at http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=151&typ=bil&val=HB1662
